In Parts one and two of our ‘Creativity vs Productivity’ blog series, we established that not only is it possible to be both creative and productive at the same time, but it’s also important for businesses to encourage these skills as a means of nurturing company growth. In this blog – part 3 of the series – we examine how to be creative yet productive at the same time, and generate the perfect balance between the two.

Understand that creativity can come anytime and anywhere

Being productive is all about completing tasks, meeting deadlines and generally ensuring business operations run smoothly. The good news is that we can think creatively and strive for that breakthrough moment at the same time as being productive.

Inspiration can come from anywhere, and it doesn’t necessarily require a team brainstorming session in a business meeting room to come up with creative goods. You might be working on an impending research project and suddenly have a ‘light-bulb’ moment, or you may be compiling a spreadsheet to present at a team meeting and think of a more innovative way to report important data. Creativity can rear its head at any given moment, and that moment can often be when we least expect it!

As Visme writes in a blog about achieving creativity and productivity simultaneously:

“There are no limits as to where your next big idea will come from. Just because your workday has ended doesn’t mean your creative pursuit stops there. Look for inspiration in anything and everything, from a TV commercial to a conversation you overheard on the subway.”

Show passion in what you do and be happy at work

Are you passionate about what you do? Do you wake up in the morning and embrace the tasks that lie ahead in your working day? Having enthusiasm, conviction and a desire for what we do is one of the key mechanisms in helping us achieve both creativity and productivity.

A lack in passion rarely leads to a great idea being sparked. Similarly, a lacklustre attitude to work is hardly conducive with a productive day in the office!

Happiness at work and having passion in what we do is hailed as being the ultimate booster for both productivity and creativity. As Positive Sharing notes, while keeping detailed logs, prioritising tasks and producing to-do lists are useful attributes in the quest to be productive, the “single most efficient way to increase your productivity [and creativity] is to be happy at work.”

Work from the right office space

Your place of work has more of an influence on the productiveness and creativity of your business than you may think.

Freelancers, sole traders and small businesses are increasingly reaping the creativity and productivity-enhancing benefits of moving into a co-working centre, opposed to working alone at home or elsewhere, with co-working membership expected to increase by 40% each year.

Being surrounded by like-minded creative types and having access to productivity-boosting facilities, such as high-speed wifi and stylish workstations, can provide freelancers, sole traders, start-ups, SMEs and larger organisations with the creative and productive boost they aspire. A survey by Deskmag supports this, with 71% of respondents saying that their creativity had increased since moving into a co-working space.

Bruno Moriset, an associate professor at the University of Lyon, described flexible office space as “serendipity accelerators” that are designed to:

“Host creative people and entrepreneurs who endeavour to break isolation and to find a convivial environment that favours meetings and collaboration.”

As we can see, keeping a positive mindset, always looking for that ‘light-bulb’ moment and moving into a well-facilitated co-working centre, offering flexible office space, can help improve both our creativity and productivity.
